General Questions

  • How long will I have to stay in hospital?

    Duration of the surgery is different from one person to the other and it changes between 1-3 hours.

  • How long do I stay in Hospital?

    The period for staying in the hospital is 3 days.

  • How do I take care of my wounds?

    Surgeries are realized laparoscopically and approximately 5 incisions are made, 1 cm. each in size. The incisions on the skin are closed with esthetic sutures after the surgery. Sutures need not be removed, they dissolve on their own and disappear. Application of medical dressing for 2 days is adequate after discharge from the hospital.

  • Can I take baths or showers?

    Bathing is allowed after the operation at the early stages.

  • What will I eat when I leave the hospital?

    You will be relayed your nutrition plan after the surgery and documents will be given by our nutritionists before the surgery.

  • When will I see my surgeon again?

    You are normally invited for checks 1 months after your discharge. However this period can be re-determined with a face to face interview, depending on your medical condition.

  • Can I drive my car?

    You can drive 1 week after you are discharged from the hospital.

  • Can I wear my seat belt?

    You can use your seat belt 1 week after you are discharged from the hospital.

  • How long before I can return to work?

    You can return to work 1 week after you are discharged from the hospital.

  • When do I start taking the Vitamin-Mineral Supplements you prescribed, and for how long?

    You will start using liquid vitamin-mineral supplements for the 1st months after you are discharged from the hospital. You can start taking tablets after 1 month. While you need to take vitamins for life after gastric bypass surgery, after sleeve gastrectomy, your physician will decide after 18-24 months, whether you should continue or not, depending on your medical condition.

  • Are there any activities that I shouldn’t do?

    You will be requested not to be involved in heavy activities the 1st months after you are discharged from the hospital.

  • When can I have intercourse?

    You can have sexual intercourse 1 month (30 days) after you are discharged from the hospital.

  • Can I go swimming?

    You can start swimming after your small incision traces are healed completely.

  • How much exercise can I do?

    Your exercise frequency will be relayed to you in detail depending on your medical condition.

  • When will I lose the weight?

    You will start losing weight after the operation.

  • What are the ways I can regain weight after weight-loss surgery?

    You must be more careful for weight control 2 years after the operation. You can gain light weight.

  • Can I expect to live a normal life after this operation without constantly worrying about secondary problems?

    Together with the weight loss which started after a successful operation, your health will be in much better condition. You will have a more comfortable life since the illnesses associated with obesity will heal fast.

  • Will I need plastic surgery for the surplus skin when I have lost a lot of weight?

    You are recommended to make an appointment/interview for plastic surgery 18 months after the operation.

  • What about pregnancy?

    Getting pregnant after the surgery becomes easier, it is not recommended to get pregnant within 12-18 months. It is recommended that you must be protected with appropriate birth control methods.

  • Will I need to take vitamin supplements?

    After surgery, you will be asked to take some vitamin supplements (Iron, B12, multivitamin, calcium, D vitamin). Your prescription will be prepared for you depending on your medical condition.

  • What about alcohol?

    Alcohol consumption for the first 6 months after the operation is not recommended. Your physician will inform you for the later period.

  • Can I eat anything in moderation?

    You will not have any problems regarding your eating. However, it is recommended that you stay under the control of our nutritionists regarding the food you must consume and not, in order you lose adequate amount of kilos.

  • Does type 2 diabetes make surgery riskier?

    Diabetic patients’ blood sugar must be under control when going into surgery. Surgery is not riskier. After the operation, their blood sugar levels will be seriously lowered, the amount of medicine they take will be decreased.

  • Will I have to go on a diet before I have surgery?

    To operate more comfortably and to reduce the surgery risk of our patients who are seriously heavy, super obese (BMI>50 kg/m2) our nutritionists may plan a special diet for a 5-10% weight loss.

Laparoscopic/Robotic Gastric Sleeve

  • How long will I have to stay in hospital?

  • Will I be in a lot of pain after the operation?

    This is a surgical laparoscopic procedure, you may experience some light pain for 1-2 hours before you gain consciousness, pain pump is used during this time to provide serious relief. Later on, you will feel relief enough to walk within 6-8 hours.

  • How long will I have to take off work?

    You can return to work and your normal routine within 1 week after discharged from the hospital. However, for those who have special health conditions, starting work after they obtain the approval of the surgeon will be appropriate.

  • What sort of dietary changes can I expect to make?

    Our nutritionists will provide you detailed information before and after surgery. Patient will be given support in all matters by providing nutrition training via skype after discharge from the hospital.

  • When can I resume regular exercise?

    After the surgery, light exercise programs will be recommended for the first few months. Possible exercise programs according to your medical condition will be shared with you in detail.

Endoscopic Orbera Intra Gastric Balloon

  • How is the Intragastrical Balloon inserted?

    Orbera is inserted in the stomach endoscopically. After providing a light sleepy state, your stomach is controlled endoscopically, after seeing there is no problem, the balloon is inflated inside the stomach with a special liquid and released. Total time is about 15-20 minutes.

  • Is the procedure painful? Are there any symptoms?

    No pain is felt during application. After Orbera is applied, stomach cramp,  nausea and vomiting can be seen during the first 48-72 hours. Medicine is given for the symptoms and your complaints are reduced and are removed entirely.

  • How is the Intragastrical balloon removed?

    Orbera is removed from the stomach endoscopically. Balloon is punctured with special tools in the stomach, liquid contained is drained and is discharged by using a special tool. Total time is about 15-20 minutes.

  • Do I have to follow a diet after the procedure?

    A special nutrition program prepared by our nutrition experts is implemented after the procedure. Your nutrition and feeding and weight loss is controlled by inviting you for further checks. Our nutrition controls can also be realized over skype.

  • Am I candidate?

    If your BMI value is over 27 kg/m 2, Orbera procedure can be implemented after your medical history is checked.

  • How much weight will I lose?

    Weight loss will change from person to person. You are expected to lose average 35-55% of your excess weight. This rate in achieved in higher values in well-adjusted people.

  • Will I lose weight quickly?

    Weight loss starts immediately after the procedure, the speed of loss will be with the adjustment you have shown.

  • How long will I have to stay in hospital?

    You do not have to stay in hospital for Orbera procedure. You can be discharged after you are kept under observation for 2-4 hours after the procedure.

  • How long will I have to take off work?

    Period for Orbera staying in the stomach is 6 months (180 days). It should be removed before exceeding this period.

  • How long will I have to take off work?

    After the application, medicine you will be taking temporarily will be given for cramps, nausea and vomiting. It is suggested that you take some acid reducing medicine until the balloon is removed to protect your stomach.

  • Will the balloon restrict me in any way?

    Orbera application contributes to your weight loss by reducing your food intake and your appetite.

  • How will my diet change after procedure?

    After the procedure, our nutritionist experts aim to provide permanent changes in your diet with regular checks.

  • What are the potential complications?

    Temporary nausea, vomiting and pain like cramps can be observed after the procedure. Rarely deflation of the balloon, clogging of intestines and bleeding (less than 0.5%) were reported. These types of complications are mostly seen in balloon procedures lasting more than 6 months.

  • What is the material used for inflating the balloon (air – liquid)?

    Orbera is a liquid injected balloon. Balloon is inflated by filling it with saline (%0.9 NaCl) between 400-700 cc. It is a balloon approved by FDA.

  • How do I know if the balloon is deflated, is it dangerous?

    Saline inside Orbera is colored with methylene blue. In case of a deflation, since blue colored liquid will be discharged from kidneys and by means of feces, there will be color change in urine and in stool; in such a case, a check is performed and balloon is removed endoscopically. This case has a probability of less than 0.5%.
